Solar shingles vs solar panels: what it means for your roof

A roofer’s view of the choice: one product is the roof covering, the other sits on top of it. That changes timing, leaks and who fixes what.

The verdict

Solar shingles vs solar panels starts with the roof under them. Solar shingles are the roof covering, so they make sense only when you are replacing the roof anyway.

Rack-mounted panels sit on an existing roof, so they fit any sound roof with years of life left, but must come off when that roof is replaced.

Choose shingles if a reroof is due now and you want one system; choose panels if the roof is newer, or you want the widest choice of installers and repairs.

Which should you choose?

Choose solar shingles if…

The roof needs replacing now, so the covering and the solar are one job.

Your slope is 2 in 12 or steeper, the code minimum for photovoltaic shingles.

An installer near you does both the roofing and the electrical work, and will service both.

Choose solar panels if…

The roof has many years left. Panels go on top of it.

You want the widest choice of installers, and parts you can swap one at a time.

You accept that panels come off and go back on when the roof is replaced.

Cost over the life of the roof

The two are priced differently because one includes a roof and one does not. Compare totals that cover the same scope.

Same scope. If the roof needs replacing, compare solar shingles against a new roof plus panels. Comparing shingles against panels alone leaves out the roof.

The reroof later. With panels, add the cost of removing and reinstalling them when the roof under them wears out.

Tax credit. The IRS states the federal residential clean energy credit is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Do not count on a federal credit; ask a tax adviser about any state or local programme.

Repairs. A failed panel is swapped. A failed solar shingle needs a matching part from the same maker.

No price ranges yet, on purpose. HyreRoof publishes a price range for a job only once it holds at least 12 dated, sourced quotes for it, and we do not hold them for this work yet.

Until then, use the factors above to read a quote, and price your own numbers in the roof cost calculator or set quotes side by side in the estimate comparison tool. The cost guide explains every line.

Which fits your climate?

Climate affects the roof first, the electricity second.

High wind

Photovoltaic shingles carry wind classifications under UL 7103. For panels, ask about racking design and how many mounts go through the roof.

Snow

Panels can hold snow and change where it slides. Plan for snow over doors and walks either way.

Hail

Ask each maker for the hail test rating on the exact product, and what the warranty says about hail.

Heat

Panels have air space under them. Shingles sit on the deck. Ask the maker how heat affects output and warranty.

Questions

Is there a federal tax credit for solar shingles in 2026?
The IRS states the residential clean energy credit is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. The separate 25C energy efficient home improvement credit also ended on that date. Check state and utility programmes with a tax adviser.
Do solar panels damage a roof?
Each mount is a hole through the roof, sealed with flashing. Done well, it stays dry. Ask how mounts are flashed and who warrants leaks at them.
Should I replace my roof before adding solar panels?
If the roof has only a few years left, replace it first, so the panels do not need to be removed and reinstalled soon after. See repair or replace.
What are solar shingles?
Roof shingles that produce electricity. See solar shingles.

Primary-source research, data analysis and fact checking

We are a research desk, not a sales floor. We read the statute, the licensing board’s own pages, the code section or the federal dataset ourselves, and every figure we publish carries the document it came from and the date we retrieved it.

Where a number cannot be traced to a primary source, we publish the shorter page and say what we could not verify.

On our first study that rule removed a Minnesota exam statistic and left two states blank. Those gaps are on the page, not in a file somewhere.

How this desk works

  • Primary sources only. Statutes from the legislature’s own publishing system, licensing rules from the board that issues the license, datasets from the agency that collected them. Never a directory, an aggregator or another guide.
  • Three states, not two. A requirement is recorded as verified present, verified absent, or not verified. Folding the third into the second would turn an unchecked cell into a factual claim.
  • Retrieval dates on everything. Regulation changes. A citation without the date it was read is not a citation.
  • Failures are published. When a source blocks automated retrieval we record the failure and leave the row empty, rather than filling it from a secondary summary.
  • Authorship is organizational. Research is attributed to this desk, never to an invented expert. Outside commentary, where used, is attributed to named and verifiable people.

Authorship on this site is organizational: the analysis belongs to the desk rather than to a named individual, and we do not publish credentials we do not hold. Our editorial policy sets out how we source, date and correct what we publish.
