What we publish, how to cite it, and how to reach the people who built it.

HyreRoof publishes eleven original studies on the United States roofing market, built from primary sources: state licensing statutes, BLS employment and fatality data, Census housing stock, NOAA storm records and municipal permit portals. All of it is free to cite with attribution and a link. Contact details, citation format, methodology and the data behind each study are below.
The one thing to get right when citing us. Every study labels which figures are agency data and which are HyreRoof calculations. Please keep that distinction in your copy. Turning one of our derived indices into an official statistic is the error we would most like to avoid.
What HyreRoof publishes
Eleven studies, a guide library for homeowners and eleven free calculators. HyreRoof is not a roofing contractor and performs no roofing work, we are an independent information resource and a platform that connects homeowners with roofing professionals.

Please link to the study rather than to this page, and please distinguish agency data from our analysis, every study labels which figures are source data and which are HyreRoof calculations. If a headline turns one of our derived indices into an official statistic, that is the error we would most like to avoid.
Methodology and data
Our methodology page sets out sources, collection, calculation, geographic limits, time periods, missing data and corrections. Research data lists what each study is built from and where the source data lives. Packaged downloads are not published yet; the underlying data is public and each study documents how to reproduce it.
Corrections and updates
Studies carry the date they were last reviewed. When we find an error we correct it and record what changed. If you believe something we have published is wrong, tell us, we would rather be corrected than cited incorrectly.
Reaching the research desk
For data requests, methodology questions, corrections, or a figure you want checked before publication, use the contact page. You can also call (866) 582-8523. Tell us your deadline and we will tell you straight away whether we can meet it, including when the answer is no.
Questions we get from journalists
Can I reproduce a chart or table from a study?
Quote and reference it with attribution and a link, yes. For republishing a full dataset or a chart in its entirety, ask us first. A formal reuse licence has not been adopted yet, so we would rather say yes explicitly than leave you guessing.
Can you provide the raw data behind a figure?
Packaged downloads are not published yet. The underlying sources are public and each study documents how to reproduce the figure, so the work is checkable today. If you need the working data for a specific study before the downloads exist, ask.
Will someone comment on a roofing story?
On what our own research shows, yes. We will not comment on a named roofing company, and we will not give an opinion on a claim, a contract or a roof we have not examined. We do not inspect roofs.
How current is the research?
Each study carries the date it was last reviewed and the date its data was retrieved. Roofing data revises retrospectively. BLS revises and NOAA’s storm database is updated after the fact, so a figure retrieved today may differ from the same figure next year. Cite the retrieval date along with the figure.
Do you accept sponsored or contributed research?
No. Nothing in the research programme is paid for by a roofing company, a manufacturer or an insurer. Our editorial policy sets out how commercial relationships are kept out of what we publish.
