The verdict

GAF vs Owens Corning comes down to the specific shingle line, the warranty your installer can register, and the accessories each wind warranty demands.

On paper, GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration are both laminated shingles that list ASTM D3161 Class F wind ratings, and each maker’s wind warranty depends on using its own starter and accessories.

We have not tested either, so this page sets out what each maker publishes and what to check. It does not rank them.

Which should you choose?

Check on a GAF Timberline HDZ quote

Whether the roof meets the four accessory requirements for the WindProven wind warranty: GAF starter strips, roof deck protection, ridge cap, and leak barrier or attic ventilation.

Whether the packages carry the StainGuard Plus logo, which the 25-year algae warranty requires.

Which warranty the installer can register, from GAF’s residential warranty guide.

Check on an Owens Corning Duration quote

Whether Owens Corning starter shingles go on both the eaves and the rakes, which the 160 mph wind warranty requires, along with Owens Corning components.

That nails land in the SureNail strip as the instructions show.

Which system warranty the installer can register, and what it excludes. Owens Corning notes its system coverage excludes non-Owens Corning products such as flashing, fasteners, pipe boots and decking.

Wind classes are explained in roof wind uplift; warranty types in manufacturer warranty.

Cost over the life of the roof

The brand is rarely the big line on a quote. The installer, the accessories the warranty needs, and the warranty tier move the price more.

Upfront. Each wind warranty depends on that maker’s own starter, ridge and underlayment products. Ask whether those are priced in, line by line.

Over the life of the roof. A longer or stronger warranty only helps if it is registered and the installation follows the instructions. Ask for the registration in writing.

Resale. Some warranties transfer to a buyer on set terms. Read the transfer clause before you rely on it.

No price ranges yet, on purpose. HyreRoof publishes a price range for a job only once it holds at least 12 dated, sourced quotes for it, and we do not hold them for this work yet.

Until then, use the factors above to read a quote, and price your own numbers in the roof cost calculator or set quotes side by side in the estimate comparison tool.

The cost guide explains every line. For this comparison, the estimate comparison tool runs both of your quotes side by side.

Which fits your climate?

Climate changes which line of the data sheet to read first.

High wind and coast

Read the wind warranty conditions, not the headline speed. Both makers tie wind coverage to their own accessories and nailing.

Hail

Compare the UL 2218 class of the exact line on your quote. Impact ratings can differ from one line to the next.

Humid, algae-prone regions

Check which algae warranty applies and what the package must show.

Cold and ice dams

The ice barrier at the eaves is a separate product; check it is in the system the warranty names.

Verdict by home type

The house rarely decides the brand. What you check does.

Questions

Is GAF or Owens Corning better?
We cannot say, and we do not rank them. We have not tested either. Both list ASTM D3161 Class F wind ratings for these lines, so compare the exact line, the warranty conditions and the installer.
What is the difference between Timberline HDZ and Duration?
On paper, both are laminated shingles. HDZ uses GAF’s LayerLock nailing area and WindProven wind warranty. Duration uses the SureNail strip and a 160 mph wind warranty with Owens Corning components and starter on eaves and rakes.
Does the brand matter more than the installer?
Both wind warranties depend on installation to the maker’s instructions with the maker’s accessories. An installation that misses them can lose coverage. See choosing a roofer.
Where do I find the real warranty?
On each maker’s warranty pages, linked below. Ask the installer which warranty they will register and for a copy.

Primary-source research, data analysis and fact checking

We are a research desk, not a sales floor. We read the statute, the licensing board’s own pages, the code section or the federal dataset ourselves, and every figure we publish carries the document it came from and the date we retrieved it.

Where a number cannot be traced to a primary source, we publish the shorter page and say what we could not verify.

On our first study that rule removed a Minnesota exam statistic and left two states blank. Those gaps are on the page, not in a file somewhere.

155

How this desk works

  • Primary sources only. Statutes from the legislature’s own publishing system, licensing rules from the board that issues the license, datasets from the agency that collected them. Never a directory, an aggregator or another guide.
  • Three states, not two. A requirement is recorded as verified present, verified absent, or not verified. Folding the third into the second would turn an unchecked cell into a factual claim.
  • Retrieval dates on everything. Regulation changes. A citation without the date it was read is not a citation.
  • Failures are published. When a source blocks automated retrieval we record the failure and leave the row empty, rather than filling it from a secondary summary.
  • Authorship is organizational. Research is attributed to this desk, never to an invented expert. Outside commentary, where used, is attributed to named and verifiable people.

Authorship on this site is organizational: the analysis belongs to the desk rather than to a named individual, and we do not publish credentials we do not hold. Our editorial policy sets out how we source, date and correct what we publish.
